One of the true bright spots for beleaguered General Motors is the recently reincarnated Camaro. No mere retro-poseur, the new Camaro is completely modern inside and out, even though its muscular styling cues pay homage to the 1960s original. Base versions pack a sufficiently powerful 304-hp, 3.6-liter V6 engine that garners respectable fuel economy (18 mpg city/29 highway). The power-hungry among you can choose the top SS model and its 6.2-liter V8 that generates a rousing 426 hp via the standard six-speed manual transmission or a still-quick 410 horses through the available six-speed automatic. A nearly ideal front-to-rear weight distribution and a fully independent suspension at all four corners deliver what we would deem steadfast cornering without an unduly harsh ride. We found that the steering is a little on the light side, however, with more power assist than some sports-car enthusiasts might prefer. Overall, the Camaro brings back memories and creates new ones, all at a reasonable price.
