Pickup owners generally are among the most brand-loyal customers that are in the business, but even those who are unwaveringly dedicated to other nameplates should seriously consider the Silverado 1500. It excels in terms of its smooth ride, adept handling, and extensive range of payloads and powertrains. Because it's offered in regular, extended- and crew-cab versions; has short and long cargo beds and wheelbases; and includes a choice of rear- or four-wheel-drive, there's literally something for everyone here. An appropriately workman-like 195-hp, 4.3-liter V6 engine is standard in base "Work Truck" configurations. Elsewhere, 4.8-, 5.3- and 6.2-liter V8s generate burly 302-, 315- and 403-hp ratings, respectively, and four- and six-speed automatic transmissions are available. The truck's maximum tow rating tops 10,000 pounds, which is sufficient for pulling all but the largest boats and trailers.
